How GCSE Biology Is Marked: Why ‘Nearly Right’ Earns Nothing

Biology is marked on precise definitions, and an answer that is nearly right in everyday words often scores zero. Here is where the marks hide — the exact terms, the explain questions, the six-markers.

Of the three sciences, Biology is the one students most often underestimate. It looks like the subject you can talk your way through — less maths than physics, fewer equations than chemistry, mostly writing. That is exactly the trap. Biology is marked on precise definitions, and precision in words is harder to fake than precision in numbers. An answer that is nearly right in everyday language routinely earns nothing, because the mark scheme is waiting for one specific term. Knowing which terms, and why, is most of the difference between a 6 and an 8.

The word is the mark

Biology has a vocabulary the mark scheme treats as non-negotiable. “The enzyme stops working” describes the right outcome but misses the mark that “the enzyme denatures” earns. “The cell splits into two” is not “the cell divides by mitosis.” Osmosis is not “water moving in” — it is the movement of water “from a dilute to a more concentrated solution across a partially permeable membrane.” These are not the examiner being pedantic. Biology tests whether you can communicate an idea in the precise form a scientist would recognise, which is the principle behind every mark scheme: the marks are for the specific point, expressed the specific way.

A practical consequence: spelling matters more than students think. Confusing mitosis and meiosis, or glycogen and glucagon, can cost the mark because the two words mean genuinely different things and the examiner cannot guess which you meant.

Explain, do not just describe

Biology questions lean heavily on the command word “explain”, and it is where a lot of marks quietly leak away. Describing a process — what happens, in order — is not the same as explaining it, which requires the reasons and the mechanism. “The stomata close” is a description; “the stomata close to reduce water loss by transpiration” is the explanation the mark scheme wants. If your answer is a correct sequence of events with no “because” and no “so that”, you are describing an “explain” question, and losing marks that are there for the taking. The fix starts with reading the command word before you write.

Data, graphs and the maths in biology

Biology carries more quantitative marks than its reputation suggests: reading values off graphs, calculating rates, percentage change, magnification, and interpreting data. These reward the same discipline as any calculation — show the working so the method marksare yours even if the final figure slips. When a question says “use data from the graph”, that is a direct instruction: an answer with no figures quoted from the axes cannot earn the marks reserved for using the data, however sound the biology around it.

Extended response: the six-mark questions

The longer questions — describing the events of the cardiac cycle, evaluating the use of stem cells, explaining how a reflex arc works — are marked by level descriptors, not a checklist. The top band rewards a linked, logical sequence using correct terminology, not the sheer number of facts. A common Biology failure is the memory dump: everything the student knows about the topic, correct but unordered, which sits in the middle band. Two well-linked, well-named steps beat six isolated ones.

Required practicals are predictable marks

The required practicals recur every year in recognisable forms: food tests, osmosis in potato cylinders, the effect of light on photosynthesis, reaction time. If you can state the independent and dependent variables, the control variables, and one way to improve accuracy or reliability, you have most of the marks before the question has finished. These are among the most reliable marks on the paper for a well-drilled student.
