How the UCAS Tariff works

UCAS gives every qualification a size band, from how long it takes to study, and every grade a grade band. The points for a grade are the size band times the grade band. An A-Level and an IB higher level subject are both size 4, so an A* or a 7 (grade band 14) is worth 56 points. An AS-Level, the EPQ and an IB standard level subject are size 2, so their top grades are worth half that. Your total is the sum over all your qualifications.

UCAS publishes new tables for each year of entry. The values here are from the 2027 Tariff tables, for students applying now to start in 2027.

Questions

How many UCAS points is A*AA?
A*AA at A-Level is 152 UCAS points: 56 for the A* and 48 for each A. AAA is 144, AAB is 136 and ABB is 128.
How many UCAS points is the IB Diploma worth?
The IB Diploma has no single Tariff value. UCAS adds up points for each higher level and standard level subject, the extended essay and theory of knowledge. For 2027 entry, 6, 6 and 5 at higher level (136), 6, 5 and 5 at standard level (64) and a B in both the extended essay and TOK (20) make 220 points.
Did the IB Tariff points change for 2027 entry?
Yes. In UCAS’s 2027 Tariff tables, IB grades 5 and below are worth more: a higher level 5 is 40 points (32 for 2026 entry) and grades 1 and 2 now carry points. Grades 6 and 7, the extended essay and TOK are unchanged. This calculator uses the 2027 tables.
Do GCSEs count towards UCAS points?
No. GCSEs and IGCSEs carry no UCAS Tariff points, though many universities set minimum GCSE grades, often in English and maths.
Does the EPQ count?
Yes. The Extended Project Qualification is worth up to 28 points for an A*, half an A-Level. Some universities lower their offer by a grade for a good EPQ instead of counting points.
Do universities make offers in UCAS points?
Some do, especially for courses with a range of qualifications. Many, including most selective universities, ask for grades such as AAB or an IB total with set higher level scores. Always check the course page.
