How GCSE Chemistry Is Marked: State Symbols, Working and Where Marks Vanish
GCSE Chemistry is marked on precision — state symbols, significant figures, the exact word. Here is where students lose marks they should have had, and how to stop.

GCSE Chemistry is one of the subjects where students most often feel they understood the paper and then open results day to a grade that does not match. The reason is rarely a gap in knowledge. Chemistry is marked on precision — of language, of notation, of working — and it is unusually unforgiving of the small omissions that other subjects let slide. A right idea written slightly wrong loses the mark. Once you know where those marks hide, you stop losing them.
State symbols are marks, not decoration
In equations, the little (s), (l), (g) and (aq) after each formula are frequently worth a mark of their own. Students who have them drilled into muscle memory pick up marks that others leave on the table simply by forgetting them under time pressure. The one that catches people out most is (aq) versus (l): water as a product of neutralisation is (l), but a dissolved salt is (aq). A balanced equation with the correct formulae but no state symbols can be a mark down before you have written anything wrong.
Balancing, and the marks split inside an equation
A single equation question often carries two marks: one for the correct formulae, one for balancing. This matters because you can earn the first even if you cannot balance it — write the correct reactants and products and you have secured a mark, so never leave an equation blank because the numbers will not come. Examiners mark the chemistry you did put down, which is the same principle that underlies method marks in calculations.
Calculations: the working carries the marks
Moles, concentration, percentage yield, atom economy — the quantitative chemistry questions are where method marks live, and where a hidden final answer is most dangerous. Show the equation, show the substitution, and carry your units through. Two habits are worth singling out for chemistry:
- Significant figures. A separate mark is often reserved for quoting your answer to an appropriate number of significant figures. An otherwise perfect calculation can drop that mark by giving eight decimal places off a calculator.
- Error carried forward. Multi-stage calculations — moles, then mass, then yield — reward correct method even after an early slip, but only if your working is visible for the examiner to follow through.
The language of chemistry is specific
Chemistry has pairs of words that students use loosely and mark schemes treat as different: atom and ion, element and compound, strong and concentrated, exothermic and endothermic. Writing “a strong acid” when you mean “a concentrated acid” is not a slip the examiner can forgive — the two describe different things, and the mark scheme is trained on the correct one. When a question asks you to explain bonding, “shared pair of electrons” earns the mark that “they join together” does not, for exactly the reasons we set out in what a mark scheme actually is.
Required practicals and the six-mark question
Every board builds questions around the required practicals, and they are predictable marks if you have revised the method precisely: the variable you control, the variable you measure, what you keep the same, and how you improve accuracy. Extended six-mark questions frequently ask you to describe or evaluate a practical, and they are marked by level descriptors, so a linked, ordered method beats a scattered list of remembered steps. Reading the command word first tells you whether you are being asked to describe the method or evaluate its reliability — a distinction worth several marks.
Board differences worth knowing
The chemistry is the same, but AQA and Edexcel present and assess it differently — the balance of recall and application, the way required practicals are examined, the exact wording their mark schemes reward. How to stop losing these marks
