- What three things can a force change about an object?
- Its speed, shape or direction.
- Is force a scalar or vector quantity?
- A vector quantity — it has both magnitude and direction.
- What is a resultant force?
- The single overall force with the same effect as all the individual forces acting on an object combined.
- What force always opposes motion?
- Friction.
- State the equation linking unbalanced force, mass and acceleration.
- F = m × a.
- State the equation for weight.
- W = m × g.
- What is stopping distance made up of?
- Thinking distance + braking distance.
- What is thinking distance?
- The distance travelled during the driver's reaction time, before the brakes are applied.
- Name two factors that increase braking distance.
- Higher speed and wet/icy road conditions (also greater mass).
- What is terminal velocity?
- The maximum, constant speed a falling object reaches when air resistance equals its weight, giving zero resultant force.
- State Hooke's law.
- Extension is directly proportional to the applied force, within the limit of proportionality.
- Define elastic behaviour.
- The ability of a material to recover its original shape after the forces causing deformation have been removed.
- A resultant force of 10 N acts on a 2 kg object. What is its acceleration?
- a = F/m = 10/2 = 5 m/s².
