What does the symbol ≤ mean?: Less than or equal to.
Is −8 greater or less than −3?: Less than (−8 < −3), because −8 is further left on the number line.
What is the result of multiplying two negative numbers?: A positive number (same signs give a positive result).
What is the result of multiplying a positive and a negative number?: A negative number (different signs give a negative result).
What does BIDMAS stand for?: Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction — the order to carry out operations.
What is the inverse operation of multiplication?: Division.
What is the inverse operation of squaring a number?: Taking the square root.
Evaluate 2 + 3 × 4.: 14 (multiply first: 3 × 4 = 12, then add 2).
Evaluate (2 + 3) × 4.: 20 (brackets first: 2 + 3 = 5, then multiply by 4).
How do you multiply two decimals, e.g. 0.2 × 0.3?: Multiply as whole numbers (2 × 3 = 6), then count total decimal places (2) to place the decimal point: 0.06.
What is the product rule for counting?: If there are m ways to do one thing and n ways to do another independent thing, there are m × n total combined outcomes.
A meal deal has 5 sandwiches and 4 drinks. How many combinations are possible?: 20 (5 × 4, using the product rule).
What is an integer?: A whole number, which can be positive, negative or zero.
Evaluate −5 − (−3).: −2 (subtracting a negative is the same as adding: −5 + 3 = −2).
Why should working be shown for BIDMAS calculations?: Examiners award method marks for correctly applying the order of operations even if the final numerical answer is wrong.
