What happens when two like magnetic poles are brought together?: They repel each other.
What happens when two unlike magnetic poles are brought together?: They attract each other.
What is a permanent magnet?: A magnet that produces its own magnetic field all the time, without needing an external field.
What is an induced magnet?: A material that becomes magnetic only when placed in a magnetic field, and loses most of its magnetism once removed from it.
Name four magnetic materials.: Cobalt, steel, iron and nickel.
In which direction do magnetic field lines point outside a bar magnet?: From the north pole to the south pole.
How is the strength of a magnetic field shown by field lines?: By how close together the field lines are — closer lines mean a stronger field.
What is a uniform magnetic field?: A field with the same strength and direction at every point, shown by evenly spaced, parallel field lines.
What is a plotting compass used for?: To detect and map the direction of a magnetic field at different points, by aligning with the field.
How does a plotting compass behave near a magnet?: Its needle aligns with the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
What does the behaviour of a magnetic compass tell us about the Earth's core?: It provides evidence that the Earth's core must be magnetic, since a compass consistently aligns with the Earth's magnetic field.
Which type of magnet is more likely to be used where a magnetic field is needed only temporarily, e.g. in an electromagnet core?: An induced magnet (e.g. iron), because it loses its magnetism quickly once the external field is removed.
