Coordinate geometry and describing movementIB MYP Maths Standard: Flashcards

What these 14 flashcards ask

  • What are the coordinates of the origin?
  • In (x,y), which number comes first and what does it measure?
  • How many quadrants are there?
  • Where is (-3,4)?
  • Distance between (-2,3) and (4,3)?
  • What is a translation?
  • How do you describe a translation?
  • Movement from (-2,3) to (4,-1)?
  • Translate (4,2) by 5 left and 3 down.
  • Are translated shapes congruent?
  • What does congruent mean?
  • What does similar mean?
  • Legs 2,3 and legs 6,9: similar?
  • Are similar shapes always congruent?

Exam questions on Coordinate geometry and describing movement

  1. ABCDABCD is a rectangle with its sides parallel to the axes on a Cartesian plane. AA is (−2,3)(-2,3), BB is (4,3)(4,3) and CC is (4,−1)(4,-1). One unit on each axis is 11 cm.
Describe the translation that maps AA onto CC, in terms of movement right or left and up or down.2 marks
  2. Triangle PP has vertices (1,2)(1,2), (4,2)(4,2) and (1,6)(1,6) on a Cartesian plane.
Triangle QQ has vertices (6,2)(6,2), (9,2)(9,2) and (6,6)(6,6). Describe the movement that maps PP onto QQ, and explain why PP and QQ are congruent.2 marks
  3. Triangle TT has vertices (0,0)(0,0), (2,0)(2,0) and (0,3)(0,3). Triangle UU has vertices (0,0)(0,0), (6,0)(6,0) and (0,9)(0,9). Triangle VV has vertices (0,0)(0,0), (4,0)(4,0) and (0,5)(0,5).
Show that triangle TT and triangle UU are similar, and state the scale factor of the enlargement from TT to UU.3 marks
