- What is an oxide?
- A compound formed between an element and oxygen.
- What is an acidic oxide, and which elements typically form them?
- An oxide that reacts with bases, typically formed by non-metals, e.g. SO2 and CO2.
- What is a basic oxide, and which elements typically form them?
- An oxide that reacts with acids, typically formed by metals, e.g. CuO and CaO.
- What is an amphoteric oxide?
- An oxide that reacts with both acids and bases to produce a salt and water.
- Name two amphoteric oxides you need to know.
- Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and zinc oxide (ZnO).
- Define a base.
- An oxide or hydroxide of a metal.
- Define an alkali, and how does it relate to a base?
- An alkali is a base that is soluble in water; all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis.
- What is the general equation for the reaction between a base and an acid?
- Base + acid → salt + water (a neutralisation reaction).
- What happens when a base is heated with an ammonium salt?
- It produces a salt, water and ammonia gas.
- How can you test for ammonia gas produced when heating a base with an ammonium salt?
- Using damp red litmus paper, which turns blue in the presence of ammonia.
