Prime Factors, HCF & LCMCambridge IGCSE Maths: Revision notes
Section 1
What is a prime factor?
A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself (e.g. 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13...). A prime factor of a number is a prime number that divides into it exactly.
Every integer greater than 1 can be written as a unique product of prime factors — this is called prime factor decomposition.
Section 2
How do I find the prime factors of a number?
Use a factor tree or repeated division by the smallest prime.
Example: express 72 as a product of prime factors
- 72 ÷ 2 = 36
- 36 ÷ 2 = 18
- 18 ÷ 2 = 9
- 9 ÷ 3 = 3
- 3 ÷ 3 = 1
So 72 =
Always write the final answer using index notation, e.g. 2^3 x 3^2, not as a long list of repeated factors.
Section 3
How do I find the Highest Common Factor (HCF)?
The HCF of two or more numbers is the largest number that divides exactly into all of them.
Using prime factor decomposition:
- Write each number as a product of prime factors
- Identify the prime factors common to all numbers
- Multiply together the LOWEST power of each common prime factor
Example: HCF of 36 = and 60 = . Common factors: and . HCF =
Section 4
How do I find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM)?
The LCM of two or more numbers is the smallest number that is a multiple of all of them.
Using prime factor decomposition:
- Write each number as a product of prime factors
- Take every prime factor that appears in any number
- Multiply together the HIGHEST power of each prime factor
Example: LCM of 36 = and 60 = . Highest powers: , , . LCM =
A common mix-up is using the lowest power for LCM instead of the highest — remember HCF takes the lowest shared power, LCM takes the highest power overall.
Must Know
- A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself
- Prime factor decomposition writes a number as a product of primes, using index notation
- HCF = product of the LOWEST power of each COMMON prime factor
- LCM = product of the HIGHEST power of EVERY prime factor involved
- Factor trees or repeated division both work for finding prime factors
- HCF x LCM of two numbers equals the product of those two numbers
That's the notes covered.
