What happens when two like magnetic poles are brought together? And two unlike poles?
Like poles repel; unlike poles attract.
Define a magnetic field.
The region around a magnet (or current-carrying wire) where a force acts on a magnetic material.
Name three magnetic materials.
Any three of: iron, steel, cobalt, nickel.
What is a uniform magnetic field?
A field where the field lines are parallel and evenly spaced, so the field strength is the same everywhere.
What is induced magnetism?
Magnetism gained by a magnetic material when it is placed in a magnetic field, causing attraction towards the inducing magnet.
What happens to induced magnetism when the material is removed from the field?
The material loses most or all of its induced magnetism.
How does a plotting compass work?
It contains a small pivoted magnet that aligns with the Earth's magnetic field, pointing towards magnetic north.
Describe the magnetic field around a straight current-carrying wire.
Concentric circles perpendicular to the wire, stronger closer to the wire.
What happens to the field around a wire if the current is increased?
The magnetic field becomes stronger.
What happens to the field direction if the current in a wire is reversed?
The direction of the magnetic field reverses.
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire that produces a strong magnetic field, similar in pattern to a bar magnet, when current flows through it.
How is an electromagnet made from a solenoid?
By adding an iron core inside the solenoid, which concentrates and strengthens the magnetic field.
Give one advantage of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet.
It can be switched on and off, and its strength can be varied by changing the current or number of turns.
