- Name three non-contact (field) forces.
- Gravity, electrostatics, and magnetism.
- Name three contact forces.
- Any three of: friction, air resistance, tension, normal contact force.
- What is friction and what can it cause?
- A force between two surfaces that impedes motion, and may result in heating of the surfaces.
- How are forces between two interacting objects represented?
- As vectors, since each force has magnitude and direction; each object exerts a force on the other.
- Give three examples of scalar quantities.
- Any three of: distance, speed, time.
- Give three examples of vector quantities.
- Any three of: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, momentum.
- What is the difference between a scalar and a vector?
- A scalar has magnitude only; a vector has both magnitude and direction.
- Give the equation for weight.
- W = m x g, where m is mass and g is gravitational field strength.
- Describe elastic distortion.
- A change in shape from which the object returns to its original shape once the force is removed.
- Describe inelastic distortion.
- A change in shape from which the object does not return to its original shape.
- What happens to a force applied to an elastic object?
- It stores elastic potential energy in the object.
- State Hooke's Law and its equation.
- The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the applied force (within the limit of proportionality): F = k x e.
- In the required practical for Hooke's Law, what is measured and plotted?
- Known forces (from added masses) are applied to a spring, the resulting extension is measured with a ruler, and force is plotted against extension.
