Where does water uptake begin in a plant?: At the root hair cells on the root surface.
Why do root hair cells have a large surface area?: To increase the uptake of water and mineral ions from the soil.
Describe the pathway of water through a plant.: Root hair cells, root cortex cells, xylem, then mesophyll cells in the leaf.
How can the pathway of water through a plant be investigated?: By placing a cut stem in water containing a coloured stain and observing where the dye travels.
What is the transpiration pull?: The upward pull on the water column in the xylem, caused by water loss from the leaves during transpiration.
What force holds water molecules together in the xylem, allowing them to be pulled up as a column?: Forces of attraction (cohesion) between water molecules.
What happens at the leaf that starts the transpiration pull?: Water evaporates from mesophyll cells and diffuses out through the stomata.
Which tissue carries water upward through the plant?: The xylem.
