What does xylem transport, and in which direction?: Water and mineral ions, upwards from roots to leaves. It also supports the plant.
What does phloem transport?: Sucrose and amino acids, from sources to sinks (either direction).
What is a vascular bundle?: A strand of tissue containing both xylem and phloem together.
Why do xylem vessel walls contain lignin?: Lignin strengthens the walls, helping to support the plant.
Why do xylem vessels have no cell contents?: To leave a hollow, unobstructed tube for water to flow through.
Why are xylem cells joined end to end with no cross walls?: To form one long continuous tube, allowing water to flow easily.
What is a root hair cell adapted to do?: Absorb water and mineral ions from the soil, using its large surface area.
Describe the pathway water takes through a plant.: Root hair cells, root cortex cells, xylem, then mesophyll cells in the leaf.
Where are vascular bundles usually found in the root?: Towards the centre of the root.
Where are vascular bundles usually found in the stem?: Around the outer region of the stem.
