- What is asexual reproduction?
- Reproduction from one parent, no gamete fusion, identical offspring.
- Two advantages of asexual reproduction?
- No need to find a mate; rapid reproductive cycle.
- Main disadvantage of asexual reproduction?
- No variation, so the whole population is equally vulnerable.
- Define sexual reproduction.
- Fusion of male and female gametes from two parents, producing varied offspring.
- Main advantage of sexual reproduction?
- Produces variation, improving survival chances if conditions change.
- Main disadvantage of sexual reproduction?
- Requires finding a mate; slower cycle.
- What is meiosis?
- Cell division in reproductive organs producing gametes.
- How many daughter cells does meiosis produce?
- Four.
- Chromosome number of meiosis daughter cells vs parent?
- Half (haploid).
- Why are meiosis's gametes genetically different?
- Each of the four cells gets a different combination of chromosomes.
- Define haploid.
- Half the normal chromosome number.
- Define diploid.
- Full chromosome number.
- How is diploid number restored?
- Two haploid gametes fuse at fertilisation.
- What is a clone?
- A genetically identical copy of the parent.
