- State the equation for density.
- ρ = m/V
- What are the units of density?
- kg/m³
- Describe the arrangement of particles in a solid.
- Closely packed in a regular pattern, vibrating in place.
- Describe the arrangement of particles in a liquid.
- Closely packed but randomly arranged, able to move past each other.
- Describe the arrangement of particles in a gas.
- Far apart, moving quickly and randomly in all directions.
- Which state of matter typically has the highest density: solid, liquid or gas?
- Solid (particles are most closely packed).
- What happens to mass when a substance changes state?
- Mass is conserved - it stays the same.
- Why are changes of state called physical changes?
- No new substance is formed, and the original substance can be recovered with its original properties if the change is reversed.
- Name the six changes of state.
- Melting, freezing, boiling, evaporating, condensing, and subliming.
- Calculate the density of an object with mass 500 g and volume 0.0002 m³ (convert mass to kg first).
- 0.5 kg / 0.0002 m³ = 2500 kg/m³
- Why does a substance's density usually change when it changes state, even though its mass stays the same?
- Because its volume changes (e.g. gases occupy far more volume than the same mass of liquid).
